Donald Ray Herring

Donald "Dondo" Ray Herring, 77, of Eufaula, passed away on December 29, 2017 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Don was born on September 16, 1940 in Pawnee, Oklahoma to Robert Benjamin and Myrtle Marie (Eshelman) Herring. Don graduated from Central High School in 1958. He attended East Central State University from 1958 - 1959; Central State College, now University of Central Oklahoma (UCO), from 1959 - 1961; Cameron University from 1987 - 1990, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education; and graduated from University of Oklahoma with his Masters of Education in 1996. On November 25, 1960, Don married Josephine Sochor. They were happily married for over fifty-seven years and raised four children together. Don worked at GMAC in Duncan and Lawton for eighteen years; at Ft. Sill Federal Credit Union as the branch manager in Lawton; and at Lee Elementary, Will Rogers Elementary, and Garfield Elementary School as the Physical Education Teacher. Don also worked as a History Teacher at Central Jr. High and Tomlinson Jr. High, where he retired. He worked part-time at NAEP conducting government testing of public school students. Don also coached football, basketball, baseball, softball, wrestling, track & field, and golf. He was a member of Jaycees in Duncan; a 32nd Degree Mason Lodge #540 in Lawton; and an India Shriner, Shriner Clown. Don was also a member of the OSSAA, USSSA, and ASA. He was a Certified Official for thirty-five years, officiating football, baseball, softball, and basketball. Don was inducted into the Lawton Sports Official Association (SWOFOA) Hall of Fame. He officiated 5 State Championship High School Football Games, the Oil Bowl (OK vs. TX) High School Football Game, State and National Men's Softball Tournaments (ASA), and State High School Baseball Tournaments. Don did volunteer work as Head Marshal at Arrowhead Golf Course, Inspector Voting Precinct of McIntosh County 205, as a Salvation Army Bell Ringer, and Bi-Monthly Meal Prep at Porum Landing Fire Department. He was an active member of Lindsey Chapel Baptist Church, where he was an alternate Sunday School Teacher for the 55+ group. Don enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, playing guitar, bowling, and volunteer work. Survivors include: his wife, Josephine Herring, of the home; son, Robert Karl Herring, of Nashua, NH; daughters: Kim Sheree Limbaugh and husband, Carl, of Eufaula, OK; Challi Mishon Bishop and husband, Randall, of Jacksonville, FL; sister in-law, Lorene Herring, of McKinney, TX; six grandchildren: Kaleigh Graeber, Sydney Herring, Bryson Herring, Haley Bishop, Alyssa Bishop, and Cameron Benton; three great grandchildren: Brody Graeber, Garrett Morrison, and Draven Graeber; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Myrtle Herring ; brother, Bobby Joe (BJ) Herring; sister, Mary Lou Finchum; and son, Shea Danell Herring.
