Gene Edward Walters

Gene Walters, 85, of Eufaula, Oklahoma, passed away on October 28, 2025, after bravely battling multiple health challenges.

Gene was born on June 8, 1940, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to George Bryant and Pearl Lilly (Chorn) Walters. He grew up in Muskogee, where he attended Central High School and graduated with the Class of 1958.

Soon after high school, Gene married his sweetheart, Shirley Admire. They made a home in Muskogee and had two children, Darla and Darrin.

Gene spent much of his professional life in insurance and real estate sales, working as an independent agent and small business owner. He knew his territory well and took pride in helping people across Eastern Oklahoma. He also spent ten years working for Brockway Glass. During his early career, Gene served six years in the Oklahoma National Guard and received an honorable discharge from the United States Army.

Gene loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and the cool, quiet beauty of fall—especially October, which was always his favorite month. He was a proud Oklahoman with a deep interest in the state’s history, particularly the stories of its oilmen and outlaws.

Above all, Gene loved his family, especially his children and grandchildren. In 2001, he moved to Eufaula to be near his brother and lifelong best friend, David. Together, they shared companionship, conversation, and brotherly loyalty until David’s passing in 2015.

Gene was the youngest of three boys, raised by a devoted father: his brothers were David Lee Walters and George William Walters. He often spoke of his carefree youth—burgers at Muskogee’s White Owl Cafe and cowboy movies at The Ritz Theater. As a teenager, he narrowly survived a burst appendix and was hospitalized for weeks. The experience left him with a lasting appreciation for being alive.

Gene also loved being in love. He charmed everyone he met with his warmth, easygoing nature, and cheerful spirit.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Darla Watkins and her husband, Jimmy, of Hartshorne, OK; and by his son, Darrin Walters and his wife, Jennifer, of Norman, OK; along with two grandchildren, Jack and Alice Walters. He was preceded in death by his parents and both of his brothers.

Those who loved him will remember his gentle spirit, his stories, and his favorite piece of advice: “Enjoy life.” Please remember him by doing so.
