James was born on February 5, 1934 in Eufaula, Oklahoma to Joe and Leah (Barnett) Colbert. He worked as a barber for fifteen years. On April 25, 1963, James married Millie Jean Walker, who preceded him in death on April 10, 2011. They were happily married for forty-eight years. From 1975 to 1985, he worked as a prison guard. James loved ministry and the word of God. He also loved to watch OU football. James was a member of the Weogufkee Indian Baptist Church. Survivors include: sons: Randy Colbert and wife, Kirsten, of Okemah, OK; Russell Colbert and wife, Rainey, of Norman, OK; daughters: Lillie Murrell and husband, Charles Jr., of Eufaula, OK; Queenie Colbert and husband, Joe Eslick, of Eufaula, OK; sisters: Medella Hill, of Eufaula, OK; Esther Harjo, of Lawrence, KS; Josephine Schanandore, of Ashland, WI; and Claudette Harjo, of Eufaula, OK; and nine grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Millie Jean Colbert; and daughter, Leah Jean Colbert Fields.
